Important Considerations Before Bringing A Rottweiler Home

Know Their Aggressive Tendencies

While Rottweilers can be turned into well-mannered dogs with an even temperament, it is important to acknowledge the breed’s naturally aggressive tendencies. If you do not give your pet the right socialization and obedience training, it may develop aggression issues in the future, leading to erratic and dangerous behavior.

Even if you have trained your Rottie well, make sure no one provokes it enough to make it aggressive. Despite being well-mannered, a Rottweiler can get really aggressive if it is pushed too far.

They Have A Bad Reputation

While you know that a Rottweiler can be really affectionate and have an even temperament, not everyone is aware of the same. The breed has earned a bad reputation over time due to its aggression. As a Rottweiler parent, you will have to deal with these preconceived notions whenever you make your family members and friends meet your pet. You might have to prove your Rottweiler’s innocence every time to bust the myth revolving around the breed.

Dealing With The Shedding

If you fail to groom your Rottweiler regularly, you will have to deal with all the annoying shedding. Rottweilers shed almost throughout the year, especially during spring and fall. If you or anyone from your family is allergic to dog hair, make sure you think twice before bringing a Rottie home. Always keep in mind that a Rottweiler is not a hypoallergic dog.

Be Careful Around Kids

Normally, you will not face any issues while your Rottweiler plays with your kids. However, this does not mean that you can leave your pet alone with your kids for too long. You never know when your kids instigate your pet and make it aggressive. From stepping onto its tail to getting physically aggressive, a kid can unknowingly make a Rottweiler aggressive. Always ensure that the play sessions between your pet and your kids are closely monitored.

Never Miss Your Pet’s Exercise

Rottweilers are bundles of energy that require their daily dose of exercise. As a Rottweiler parent, make sure you take your pet out on at least two walks of thirty minutes each. This helps it burn calories and maintain an even temperament. It is also advisable to indulge your Rottweiler in physical activities within and outside the house. Skipping these sessions will lead to issues like obesity, erratic behavior, etc.

They Are Difficult To Control While Walking

Before bringing a Rottie home, you should know that it may be a little difficult for you to control it while taking it out on walks. Being high on energy, your pet will pull the leash with all its might if it gets distracted and wants to chase an object or a small animal. Make sure you choose a strong collar and leash to control your Rottweiler effectively.

Not The Best Apartment Dogs

Rottweilers often require a lot of space to roam around freely. This, along with their size, does not make them the best apartment dogs. If you live in a small apartment, you may find it difficult to accommodate a Rottweiler.
