Interesting Facts About Pugs
Pugs are fun dogs that love their owners and yearn to keep them happy. Before you welcome your little friend home, here are a few interesting Pug facts that will make your journey as a pet parent even more exciting:
They Were Lapdogs To Chinese Emperors
Along with impressing the Buddhist monks, Pugs were also lapdogs to Chinese emperors for the longest time. They were bred to be companion dogs who showered their owners with a lot of love and loyalty. This is probably why the breed does not need a lot of exercise to stay in shape.
The Wrinkles On Their Forehead Have A Purpose
The unique wrinkles in a Pug’s forehead are not there by chance. Chinese emperors purposefully bred Pugs to have such wrinkles on their foreheads as they bore a resemblance to the popular Chinese character “Prince.”
Pugs Have Been Loved By Several Famous People
A lot of famous people around the world have been smitten by the Pug charm! From Queen Victoria and Rob Zombie to Valentino and Gerard Butler, the list of famous Pug lovers is endless.
Pugs Have No Connection To Bulldogs
While Pugs are often referred to as “Dutch Bulldogs,” it is important to know that the two breeds are not related. DNA tests have disproven any connection between Bulldogs and Pugs, despite the similarities in their appearances. Instead of Bulldogs, Pugs share their roots with the Pekingese.
Pugs Were Pets To Buddhist Monks
Pugs go back a long way and have had the privilege of being pets of some of the wisest Buddhist monks. The breed’s earliest records take us back to China where Pugs were common pets in Buddhist monasteries. The earliest known evidence of Pug's existence can be dated as back as 400 BC. This makes Pugs one of the oldest breeds to have walked the earth!
The Breed Has Impressed Napoleon’s Wife
Josephine, Napoleon’s wife, is known to have had a feisty and protective Pug with the name of Fortune. Before she was married to Napoleon and was in prison during the Reign of Terror, the Pug used to carry her messages from the prison to Josaphine’s first husband. Moreover, Fortune is famous for notoriously biting Napoleon on his wedding night when he asks his wife to get the dog out of their bed.
